🧫 3 quick facts about pigmented fungi in aquaculture!

Based on my recent review of current applications and future prospects:

  • Natural color boosters: Certain red yeasts (e.g., Phaffia) enhance pigmentation in fish and crustaceans, reducing the need for synthetic additives.

  • Immune modulation: Some pigmented fungi can stimulate the fish’s innate immune system and improve resistance to stress and pathogens.

  • Growth & antioxidant benefits: Experimental diets show improved growth rates and reduced oxidative damage in several species.

But here’s what still needs work... While the potential of pigmented fungi is clear, we still need more research into standardized production, purity, and safety protocols — especially for use in regulated aquaculture and food systems. That’s why staying updated on processing hygiene and food safety standards is so important when exploring innovative feed solutions.
